If you are a digital nomad looking for your next base, Split is a great option. Located on the Adriatic coast, it’s a mix of modern and ancient history, mostly known for its UNESCO listed Diocletian’s Palace as well as its beaches. Split is also surprisingly affordable, compared to many other European cities. There are lots of things to do in Split, and it’s also a gateway to some of the most picturesque islands in Croatia. Not to mention national parks such as Krka National Park and Plitvice! Now that you’ve had some insight into why you should consider choosing Split as your base, here is your digital nomad guide to Split.

Practical information

Let’s start this digital nomad guide to Split with some practical info! Croatia has recently joined the Schengen Area and has taken up the Euro instead of Kunas.

Currency: Euro
Visa situation: Croatia is a part of the Schengen Area. Croatia offers digital nomad visas which allows you to stay up to one year, all info about the digital nomad visas can be found here.
Language: Croatian is the official language, but English is widely spoken
Debit/credit cards: Both debit and credit cards are widely accepted, however, some places have a minimum spend of a few Euros when paying with cards. Although cards are widely accepted, I would advise you to always carry a small amount of cash, just in case.
ATM’s: Avoid the Euronet ATM’s at all cost, those are the most expensive ones to use. Only use ATM’s from actual banks, OTP banka has been my go-to as I’ve found they have the lowest fees.

Why Split is an ideal destination for digital nomads

There are many reasons to choose Split, Croatia, as your next base.

It’s pretty affordable

Although not as cheap as many of the Balkan countries, such as Albania and Bosnia – Split is relatively affordable compared to many Western European countries. This is especially true when it comes to accommodation, well, except for in the high season (July and August) where prices in Split, as in most of Europe, are at an all time high. I would advise you to visit outside of those months, not only because of the high cost, but also because it gets incredibly crowded.

Croatia is incredibly safe

Statistically, Croatia is incredibly safe, and that is very on par with my experience there. I never so much as felt uncomfortable, even walking around late at night by myself, I never felt unsafe.

It’s easy to get around

Traveling around Croatia is easy, regardless of whether you are planning to hire a car or use public transport. The roads are great and there are plenty of buses that will take you around the country. Here I have a full post about how to get around Croatia.

Plenty of things to see

There are plenty of things to see and do, both in and around Split. There is of course the old town, plenty of beautiful beaches, as well as the many islands that are just a short boat ride away. Click here to read my full post on things to do in Split.

English is widely spoken

Unlike many of the other Balkan countries, such as Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia – English is widely spoken in Croatia. You are therefore unlikely to experience problems due to language barriers.

Where to live in Split

Where in Split you want to live will depend on your preferences. For those wanting to stay close to the beaches, I’d recommend checking out Firule and Bacvice. If you want to stay in the middle of the action, the old town would be ideal, but it is also the most expensive area. I stayed in Firule for 6 weeks and really loved that area, it’s really close to the ocean and you have lots of cafés and supermarkets within walking distance. I have also stayed in Bol, between the Joker Mall and the old town, which was also great as it’s more affordable than the old town but only a 10min walk away.

Accommodation in Split, Croatia

This digital nomad guide to Split wouldn’t be complete without a guide to securing accommodation. Finding places to stay in Split is easy, that is apart from the high season months, July and August. As for the rest of the year, I’ve found it’s easy to find affordable accommodation. To give you an idea, I paid around €800 for a modern one bedroom apartment, about 10min walking distance from the old town, in October of 2022. I have always used Airbnb to find rentals in Split and have had really good experiences. You can also find long-term rentals on Booking, which, due to the increasingly high fees on Airbnb, might be a cheaper option.

Below are a few suggestions for really nice apartments with amazing reviews!

Apart from Airbnb and Booking, you can find apartments to rent through Njuskalo and in Facebook groups. I’ll link a few active Facebook groups below. If you are planning to rent through Njuskalo or Facebook, always be cautious as, unfortunately, there are lots of scammers out there that are ready to take your money and run. I would highly recommend you to not pay anything until you’ve seen the place in person, which might require you to book a few nights in a hostel or a hotel to begin with.

There are plenty of laptop friendly cafés in Split, as well as a few coworking spaces. Having spent a few months in Split as a digital nomad, I’ve tried a whole lot of cafés, here is a post covering my favourite cafés to work from in Split.

Valencia is a popular destination for digital nomads as well as students. Having lived in Valencia for extended periods of time, and being the coffee fan that I am, I have tried a lot of different cafés. One thing to understand about Valencia, and just Spain in general, is that many cafés don’t allow the use of laptops. It’s also pretty common for cafés not to have wifi. Cafés that are not laptop friendly will often have a sign that explains this – but not all. If you’re unsure whether or not you are allowed to use your laptop, make sure to ask before you order as many places are very strict on their non-laptop policies and will tell you to put it down immediately. So with that being said, here are the best cafés to work or study from in Valencia.

1. Dulche de Leche

This one is my go to. Dulche de Leche is perfect for when you want something sweet. Although they have some sandwiches and juices, their main focus is cakes and pastries. They have a few location throughout Valencia, one in Rusafa (my go to), one in the center and a third one close to the Arts & Science center. Laptops are allowed from Monday through Thursday – and they are strict on that.

2. Café ArtySana

A very popular spot for coworking, and for a good reason. They have two locations in Valencia, one in Rusafa and another one in Cabanyal. In my opinion it’s the perfect spot to have breakfast or lunch – they have stuff like salmon bagels and a whole lot of sandwiches. Then of course the typical juices, coffees and pastries – including some vegetarian options. Café ArtySana is very popular among digital nomads, and it’s often packed with mostly people working or studying from their laptops.

3. Brunch Corner – La Virgen

Brunch Corner is an aesthetic café located in El Carmen. As the name suggests, they focus on brunches. They have a variety of bagels, pancakes, sandwiches, cakes and whatnot. Using laptops is allowed during weekdays only.

4. Jungle Por Favor

This one opened quite recently in the Arrancapins neighbourhood. It’s a small cozy space with a lot of flowers, offering salads, sandwiches as well as coffees and juices. For those that are vegan – they do have some vegan options!

5. Starbucks

You can always count on Starbucks when it comes to laptop friendly cafés. They have two locations in Valencia, both in the center, one on Passeig de Rusafa and one on Calle Sant Vicent Mártir.

6. Fornelino Russafa

A perfect option if you aren’t looking to have a full meal. Fornelino’s main focus is croissants – the Nutella ones are my favourite! They have other types of pastries as well as coffee. Fornelino is located in the middle of Rusafa as well as on Peris y Valero, which I’d say is usually the more quiet of the two.

7. Flying Bean Coffee

This one is one of my favourites – it’s located here, just a short walk from Rusafa. The avocado toast and the cinnamon rolls are my go-to’s, and the coffee is great. It’s a really cozy place and in my experience it’s usually pretty quiet.

If you’re looking to stay in Valencia for more than just a holiday, you’ve come to the right place. Weather you’re wanting to rent an entire apartment or a room in a shared apartment, this post will guide you through the options you have. Before diving into how to find apartments and rooms to rent in Valencia, I want to remind you to never send any payments before having seen the property in person! Unfortunately, there are lots of scammers on the internet, some running a common scam that includes advertising rooms or apartments they don’t own, with the intention of scamming people out of money. If something looks to good to be true, it usually is. So with that being said, let’s get into how to find apartments to rent in Valencia.

1. Spotahome

Spotahome is similar to Airbnb, but is geared more towards longer stays where Spotahome acts as an agent between the landlord and the tenant. It’s very user friendly and allows you to filter out accommodations based on availability, your budget, property and a number of other factors. On Spotahome you’ll find both apartments and rooms in shared apartments, for anywhere from a month to 12+ months. What I like about Spotahome is that before booking you’ll see an exact overview of how much you’ll pay each month. You can even search for apartments that don’t require a deposit! A

So how does it work? When you find an accommodation you’re interested in, you’ll send a booking request, and the landlord then has up to 24 hours to respond. You will only be charged if and when the landlord accepts your request. The landlord doesn’t receive any payments until 48 hours after you check in, so in case the room/apartment isn’t as described, you’ll be able to report it to Spotahome before the landlord has received any payments. Spotahome charge a one time fee for each booking. By booking through this link or using the code SOLD-3e2q-T you can get a 30€ discount off your booking.

2. Badi

Badi is a platform similar to Spotahome, but mainly features rooms in shared apartments. It offers a variety of filters that will help you find exactly the type of place you’re looking for. On Badi you can find accommodations for anywhere from a month to 12+ months. When you find an accommodation you’re interested in, you’ll message the landlord and arrange a viewing date and then eventually sign a contract directly with the landlord.

3. Idealista

Idealista is a website where you can find rooms and apartments to rent, as well as apartments for sale. It’s important to know that landlords will normally not respond to messages on Idealista or even text messages, which may sound old fashioned, but that’s just how it works in Spain. So, when you find a room/apartment you like – you should pick up the phone and call the phone number listed in the ad. Unless the listing states otherwise, don’t expect the landlord to speak English as this is rare in Spain. So if you don’t speak Spanish, you will most likely need to find someone that does to translate for you.

Unlike Spotahome, Idealista does not act as an agent between the landlord and the tenant, it’s only a website where owners can advertise their rooms/apartments. You’ll sign a contract directly with the landlord after viewing the room/apartment.

4. Facebook groups

Facebook groups are another way to find rooms or apartments to rent in Valencia. While perhaps not the most efficient way to find accommodation, you might get lucky! If you choose to go with this option, just remember to watch out for scammers and never send any money before having seen the room/apartment in person. I’d even recommend google searching the photos to see if they have possibly be stolen from an Airbnb listing, for example.

The Hungarian capital is an incredibly charming city that deserves a place on every traveler’s bucket list. Famous for its thermal baths, stunning architecture, history, as well as its nightlife, it’s no wonder this lively city has become more and more popular with tourists in recent years. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Budapest is very affordable, so if you’re looking for an interesting destination that won’t break the bank, Budapest is a great option! One thing you may wan to know before visiting is that Budapest was divided into two separate cities up until 1873 – Buda on one side of the Danube River and Pest on the other. Before jumping to the three day Budapest itinerary, let’s first have a look at where to stay and how to get around the city!

Where to stay in Budapest

Budapest offers plenty of accommodations for all budgets! I stayed at Maverick Urban Lodge, which is a budget friendly hostel located on the Pest side and had a great experience.

• Luxury: Áurea Ana Palace by Eurostars. An incredible traditional five star hotel, situated at the heart of Budapest. The hotel is beautiful and features a spa and wellness centre with a sauna, among other things.
• Mid-range: Gerlóczy Boutique Hotel. Set in a historic building, this boutique hotel is located in the very center of Budapest.
• Budget friendly: Maverick Urban Lodge one the best hostels I’ve stayed at! Amazing facilities, beds have privacy curtains as well as plug-ins and a reading light. Prices from as low as 9EUR per night!

How to get around Budapest

Public transportation in Budapest is efficient and easy to use. It consists of a metro system, trams and buses and tickets can be purchased online or on the BKK vending machines at the stations. A single ticket costs 350 HUF (around 0.9 EUR). I always bought my tickets through the BKK app, which is available for Apple and Android users and can be downloaded here. Note that you need to activate your ticket before using it! This is done in the orange machines at the stations, or if you bought the ticket through the app, you simply activate it in the app.

Budapest is pretty walkable, but you will probably want to use some sort of transportation to get from one part of the city to another.

Three day Budapest Itinerary Day 1: Pest side

I’d say that one of the best ways to start your day in Budapest is with a breakfast or brunch at Double Shot Coffee & Brunch. They have bagels, acaí bowls, eggs benedict, french toasts, burritos and whatnot – everything I tried there was delicious (especially the salmon bagel!). Note that it’s a very popular place (cause it’s that good), so try to arrive before 11am, and/or reserve a table in advance!

Now it’s time to head to the Dohany Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe. For those that are into history, check out this guided tour that includes a visit to the Dohany Street Synagogue, as well as a walk through the Jewish quarter.

From there, you can do a 20 minute walk or opt to take the bus to Shoes on the Danube bank, a memorial of Jews who were murdered there during World War II. Then do the 10 minute walk along the Danube promenade to the Hungarian Parliament, one of the most famous landmarks in Budapest.

Next up on this three day Budapest itinerary is St. Stephen’s Basilica, a Roman Catholic basilica. Side note, you can take some cute photos of the Basilica from the street Zrínyi Ulica :))) During winter there is also a market on that street, as well as in front of the Basilica. If at this point you feel like sitting down and grabbing a cup of coffee, I can recommend Madal Café and Cause Café & Roastery. Or, if you wanna have coffee in the company of lots of cats, there is a Cat Café really close to the Basilica :))) Then you can take a walk through the Jewish Quarter, located in District 7. Make sure not to miss the Jewish Ghetto Wall Fragment.

For dinner I’d recommend Bestia – it’s a nice restaurant (yet not overly expensive) that offers hamburgers, meat, fish and soups, as well as some vegetarian dishes. Then if you’re up for it, Budapest has those so called ruin bars that are worth checking out, even if you aren’t really a going-out type of person. The ruin bars are a collection of bars, situated inside neglected pre-war buildings that have been transformed into cool & unique bars. The most famous of those bars is Szimpla Kert. Just like the rest of the ruin bars, it’s furnished with garage sale type of furniture, which gives them this unique vintage vibe. It consists of two floors and a total of nine bars! And don’t worry if you’re on a budget – a beer costs less then 2 euros!

The ruin bars are located in Budapest’s old District, the VII neighbourhood (the old Jewish quarter). The neighbourhood was left to decay after World War II, so it was a perfect place to develop an underground bar scene, which I guess is not so underground anymore, though :))

Day 2: Buda side

On the second day of this three day Budapest itinerary, it’s time to check out the other side of Budapest, the Buda side! Buda is a more upper class part of the city, while also having a more residential feel. For breakfast, or just to grab a coffee, I can recommend 4minutes cafe, a small cozy place with great coffee, pastries (vegan!) and overnight chia.

One of the most famous landmarks in Budapest is located on the Buda side, the Fisherman’s Bastion. Located on top of a hill, this fairytale-like castle offers panoramic views of the city – and in my opinion, is the most instagrammable place in Budapest! Entry to the Fisherman’s Bastion is free of charge, but if you want to visit the upper towers there is a 1000 HUF (2.6 EUR) fee to be paid. While you’re at it, check out Matthias church, which is located right next to the Fisherman’s Bastion.

Next up on this three day Budapest itinerary is the Buda Castle. An historical castle and palace complex that’s often referred to as the Royal Palace, as it used to be where the Hungarian kings lived. It’s one of the main symbols of Budapest and houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest Historical Museum. To get to the castle you can either take the funicular or you can take the steep stairs from the Chain Bridge. I’d recommend taking the funicular – thank me later!

From there, head over to Gellért Hill, a hill overlooking the Danube river as well as the city. The walk up to the hill is relatively easy and takes 15-20 minutes. If for whatever reason you don’t feel like walking, the Budapest Hop-on Hop-off bus also makes a stop at Gellért Hill. Make sure to visit Citadella, an historic fortress located on Gellért Hill. Note that Citadella is closed until later in 2023 due to reformation, but you can still explore the rest of Gellért Hill.

After exploring Gellért Hill, head back down and walk across Liberty Bridge. Just as you cross the bridge, you’ll spot your next stop, Central Market Hall. It’s the largest market hall in Budapest, a beautiful vibrant market where you’ll find all sorts of foods, wines, souvenirs, clothes, household items and whatnot. Note that unfortunately some of the businesses seem to take advantage of tourists by overcharging, refusing to give a receipt or tell you what exactly you’re paying for, so just keep that in mind. The market is still worth a visit, even if it’s just to walk through and explore.

In the evening, I’d recommend having dinner and/or drinks at 360 Bar where you have views of the city’s skyline, live music as well as a selection of cocktails! During winter, they even offer heated igloos on the roof that will keep you warm – just make sure to book one in advance.

Day 3

The third and last day of this three day Budapest itinerary will start with a visit to the famous Széchenyi Thermal Baths. As the mornings there are less crowded, this is the ideal time to visit. After relaxing at the thermal baths, and perhaps grabbing some lunch, the Vajdahunyad Castle is next up on the itinerary. The castle is located within one of the largest public parks in Budapest, City Park, just a short walk from the Széchenyi Baths. It’s worth adding that during the winter there is an ice skating rink there as well! Before leaving the City Park area, make a stop at Heroes’ Square, one of the major squares in Budapest.

Once you have checked out Heroes’ Square, now head over to Budapest Eye, which is roughly a 10 minute metro ride away (take the M1 metro line to the Deák Ferenc Tér stop). The Budapest Eye is a huge Ferris wheel that will give you a bird’s eye view of Budapest. Each ride lasts around 10 minutes, with the wheel going three rounds. Standard tickets to the Budapest Eye are 3900ft (around 10EUR).

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most underrated countries in Europe, in my opinion at least. Often overshadowed by more popular neighbouring countries such as Croatia and Montenegro, Bosnia still seems to be a little of the radar. With its medieval villages, stunning nature, lakes & waterfalls, as well as very friendly locals – this Balkan gem is definitely worth your time. Oh, and I should add, Bosnia is incredibly affordable! Most people that visit Bosnia only visit the picturesque town Mostar, but there’s a lot more to see! Keep reading to discover the best places to visit in Bosnia.

Basic info

Before we get into the best places to visit in Bosnia & Herzegovina, I wanted to start with some practical info that will come in handy when visiting Bosnia.

Visa: Bosnia isn’t a part of Schengen or the EU. Most nationalities will get a 90 day visa upon arrival, but make sure to double check official information before traveling to Bosnia.

Currency: The official currency in Bosnia is the Bosnian Mark. 1 Euro equals about 2 Bosnian Marks.

Debit and credit cards: While bigger supermarkets and some restaurants will accepts payments with debit or credit cards, most store and restaurants operate on a cash only basis. In Bosnia, cash is king, so make sure to always have some cash on you!

Getting around: The best way to get around Bosnia is by renting a car. Public transport is another option for those that can’t or don’t want to drive. The buses aren’t great and don’t necessarily run on time, but they’ll get you from A to B. Tickets can be bought directly at the bus station, on Omio or Getbybus.

Accommodation: I booked all my accommodation in Bosnia through booking.com

Sim cards/internet: Prepaid sim cards are widely available throughout Bosnia, I got mine from a small supermarket. 15GB for 4 KM (2 EUR), not bad! In case your phone supports eSim, I highly recommend that you check out the packages available at Airalo.

Now, onto the best places to visit in Bosnia!

1. Mostar

The small town of Mostar is one of the most iconic destinations in Montenegro. This picturesque town is most famous for Stari Most, which simply translates to Old Bridge in English. On both sides of the bridge there are narrow cobble stone streets filled with bazaars, souvenir shops, as well as cafés and restaurants. Mostar can be explored in just a day, and as such, is a very popular destination for day trips. This leads to Mostar getting flooded with day trippers during the middle of the day, so try to explore the old town in the morning or late afternoon if you can. Although you can see the highlights of Mostar in a day, I think it’s worth spending 2-3 days there if you can.

How to get to Mostar

There is no airport in Mostar, so the best way to get there is to drive or take a bus from nearby cities such as Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla or Dubrovnik. Click here to look up buses and click here to compare prices of all the major car rentals to make sure you get the best deal.

2. Blagaj

A short 20 minute drive from Mostar is the scenic village of Blagaj. Most commonly visited on a day trip from Mostar, Blagaj’s main landmark is the Dervish House, an Ottoman style monastery, but its beautiful nature and landscape are another reason for visiting. There are a few cafés and restaurant around the river, that are great for sitting down and taking in the views. If you have time, you may also want to check out Blagaj Fortress which is located on a hill about a 20 minute hike from the village.

There is no entrance fee to enter Blagaj, but if you wish to visit the Dervish House, there is a fee of 10 KM (5 EUR).

How to get to Blagaj

Blagaj is located about a 20 minute drive from Mostar. The easiest way to visit Blagaj is to either rent a car or to book a day trip. There are also public buses available from from Mostar to Blagaj, leaving from Spanski Trg in Mostar – click here for the time table. Another option is to take a taxi, which should cost about 15 KM (7.5 EUR) from Mostar.

3. Kravica Waterfall

Kravica waterfall is located within the Kravica National Park, about a 45 minutes drive from Mostar. The park is a popular tourist destination that’s most famous for the spectacular Kravica waterfall. Apart from taking a swim, you can sunbath, rent a canoe, hike one of the hiking trails or grab a drink or a snack from one of the cafés or restaurants found within the park. Furthermore, there are a few souvenir shops within the park. Most of the day trips will make a 2-3 hour stop at the waterfall, but if you’re driving there yourself, you can easily spend a whole day there. I’d recommend getting there in the morning, as it gets pretty crowded in the afternoon as that’s when most of the day trippers will arrive. Certainly one of the best places to visit in Bosnia!

Entrance fee to Kravica is 20 KM (10 EUR), if you’re visiting on a day trip, the entrance fee is most likely included in the price.

How to get to Kravica waterfalls

To visit Kravica Waterfall, you can either rent a car or book a day trip. Day trips to Kravica waterfalls run from Dubrovnik, Mostar and Sarajevo. There aren’t any direct public buses that will take you to Kravica waterfalls.

4. Pocitelj

Located just a 30 minute drive from Mostar, is a small stone village called Pocitelj. This charming Medieval town was built in the 14th century and is often referred to as Bosnia’s open-air museum. After getting heavily destroyed during the Croat-Bosniak war, Pocitelj has undergone extensive restoration work and has since been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. Pocitelj is best explored on foot, just follow the narrow cobblestone paths through the village, which will lead you up to a lookout point called Pocitelj Kula. Make sure to visit the Hadzi-Alijina mosque, the Gavrakapetan tower, Gavrankapetanovica residential house and of course the lookout point.

How to get to Pocitelj

The easiest way to visit Pocitelj is to either rent a car or to book a day trip. Most day trips to Pocitelj also include stops at the Kravica waterfalls and Blagaj. I did one of those day trips from Mostar and can highly recommend it.

It’s also possible to take a public bus from Mostar to Pocitelj, note that there isn’t an official bus stop in Pocitelj but drivers will be happy to drop you off at Pocitelj. The nearest bus station is 6km away in Capljina, so that’s the station you should search for. Tickets are around 3EUR and can be bought directly at the bus station or here, where you can also see the timetable. 5. Sarajevo

Surrounded by mountains, the Bosnian capital is a melting pot of different cultures and religions. Often described as the city where east meets west, the perfect way to get a feel for Sarajevo is by doing a walking tour, where a local guide will take you to historical places and important sites in the city. Past history is still visible throughout Sarajevo, as while many buildings were reconstructed after the war, you can still see bullet holes in some buildings. What is unique about Sarajevo is how many diverse religions can be seen, within just a short walk you can come across a Catholic cathedral, an Orthodox cathedral and a synagogue. When visiting Sarajevo, make sure not to miss the Sarajevo War Tunnel, the Latin Bridge, Bascarsija (Sarajevo’s old bazaar), Gazi Husrev-beg’s mosque, Sebilj Fountain, Tunnel of Hope, Avaz Twist Tower and the Yellow Fortress. I would recommend spending at least two days in Sarajevo.

How to get to Sarajevo

There are a number of both domestic and international flights to Sarajevo. To get from the airport to the city, there is public bus that takes you to the city center for 5 KM (2.5 euros), find the schedule here. As the bus doesn’t depart very frequently, you might also want to look into booking a private transfer. If you’re coming from elsewhere in Bosnia or from the neighbouring countries, another way to get to Sarajevo is to rent a car or take a public bus.

6. Banja Luka

The second largest city in Bosnia, Banja Luka, is a quiet town located close to the Croatian borders. Situated on the banks of the vibrant green Vrbas River, throughout the city you’ll find relaxing spaces along the river to sit down and admire the nature. Just as in Sarajevo, different types of religious building can be found within Banja Luka – the most famous ones being the Ferhadija Mosque and Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Other attractions that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Banja Luka include the Kastel Fortress, the city’s main shopping street Gospodska, and a local market called Gradska Trznica Market. I would recommend spending at least two days exploring Banja Luka.

How to get to Banja Luka

During the summer months, from April/May until September/October, there are a number of airlines operating flights to Banja Luka airport – including low cost airlines such as Wizzair and Ryanair. Another way to get to Banja Luka is to rent a car or take a public bus.

7. Una National Park

Una is the largest of the four national parks found in Bosnia. It’s located close to the Croatian borders, close to the city of Bihac – which is the gateway to Una National Park. Established in 2008 to protect the nature around the Una river, the park is mostly known for its stunning rivers and waterfalls as well as being a popular destination for rafting. The main attraction within the park is Strbacki Buk, a fascinating collection of waterfalls that shouldn’t be missed!

How to get to Una National Park

Una National Park is located a 2.5 hour drive from Banja Luka and a 5 hour drive from Sarajevo and Mostar. The best way to get there is to rent a car.

Are you looking to get from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Guatemala? You’ve come to the right place! San Cristóbal de las Casas, usually referred to as San Cristóbal, is a colonial city in the state of Chiapas in Mexico. It’s a fascinating town that’s known for its unspoiled colonial architecture, as well as its rich indigenous culture. From there, it’s common for backpackers to make their way down to neighbouring Guatemala, by colectivos or by bus. Crossing the borders from Mexico to Guatemala may seem complicated, but there’s no need to worry – the process is pretty straight forward. Before getting into how to get from San Cristóbal to Guatemala, I just want to remind you to bring snacks & drinks for the journey! It’s gonna be a long one, regardless of which transport option you choose :)))

Getting from San Cristóbal to Guatemala by chicken bus

A colectivo (chicken bus) is the most budget friendly option to get from San Cristóbal to Guatemala. For those not familiar with colectivos (also often referred to as chicken buses), these are mini vans that don’t have a fixed schedule, but instead leave when the bus has filled up. Note that colectivos only accept cash! Here’s how to get from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Guatemala by colectivos:

• Take a colectivo from San Cristóbal to Comitán (the bus terminal in San Cristóbal is located next to the ADO terminal, exact location here). Cost: 70pesos (3.5 USD)
• Take a colectivo from Comitán to Ciudad Cuauhtémoc. Cost: 75 pesos (3.75 USD)
• Get your stamp to exit Mexico. Note that if you arrived in Mexico by plane, the exit tax is included in your ticket. If you arrived another way, you may be charged the exit tax of $1150 pesos (around 58 USD).
• Catch a taxi to the Guatemala border. Cost: 15 pesos (0.75 USD) per person with a full taxi
• Get your stamp to enter Guatemala.
• Catch a tuktuk to the colectivo stop. Cost: 3Q (0.4 USD)
• When you get to the colectivo stop, tell the drivers where you want to go and they’ll help you.

Expect the journey to take 10-12 hours if you’re headed to Lake Atitlán, and closer to 12 hours to Antigua.

Shuttle bus from San Cristóbal to Guatemala

In case you aren’t quite up for making the journey by chicken bus, another pretty affordable, but more convenient option, is to take a shuttle bus. These will cost more, but in return will make the journey much simpler as you won’t need to be changing buses all the time, as well as providing door-to-door service. Tickets can be purchased from one of the many tour operators in San Cristóbal, you’ll find plenty around the center. Prices are pretty steep, around $1500 pesos (75 USD), and I’d recommend purchasing a ticket 2-3 days in advance just in case. The process will look something like this.

• You will be picked up by your shuttle bus and drive to the border.
• Once at the border, you’ll hand over your passport and get your exit stamp from Mexico. Note that if you arrived in Mexico by plane, the exit tax is included in your ticket. If you arrived another way, you may be charged the exit tax of $1150 pesos (around 58 USD).
• Get back on the bus and drive to the Guatemala side of the border. This is where you’ll get your stamp to enter Guatemala.
• After getting your entry stamp and entering Guatemala, another shuttle bus will be waiting for you and will take you to your final destination in Guatemala.

Final thoughts

If you’re still not sure which transportation options to choose, here are my thoughts on each. Although it may sound complicated to make the journey by colectivos (chicken buses), it really isn’t. This route is frequented by backpackers and you are very unlikely to encounter any problems, especially if you speak Spanish. Just make sure to start your journey early so you won’t arrive too late. The main inconvenience, in my opinion, is that the colectivos don’t have A/C and tend to get very crowded. If that sounds like a nightmare to you and you aren’t on a strict budget, I’d go with the shuttle bus. The shuttle buses normally have A/C and don’t get overcrowded, so it will be a much smoother ride. For those on a budget, colectivos (chicken buses) are the obvious choice.

You can of course also make the journey by a rental car, just make sure to read the find print and familiarize yourself with the possible extra charges for renting a car in one country and returning it in another.

Zagreb is the cultural heart and the capital of Croatia. Fascinating buildings, historical sites, museums and art are some of the things you’ll come across in Zagreb. Then there are of course a number of great restaurants & cafés! I’ve visited Zagreb a few times over the years, it’s one of those cities I seem to keep coming back to, and it might just be for all the food! Here is your guide to where to eat in Zagreb, with both healthy and not-so-healthy options, not in any particular order!

1. Eggspress

The first restaurant where I’d recommend that you eat in Zagreb is Eggspres. Located just a few minutes away from the center, Eggspress, as the name suggests, is all about eggs. Their menu includes omelettes, scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, spicy eggs and some more eggs :))) I would suggest going there for brunch, and if Mimosas are your things, well, they have those!

2. Good Food

This was one of my top choices for lunch and dinner! Good Food offers burgers (both meat based and vegetarian), salads, tortillas, sandwiches and juices. Prices are very decent and the food is great. I can especially recommend the vegetarian burger and the sweet potato fries! Good Food shares its space with another restaurant called Soho, which serves delicious sushi and poke bowls. I haven’t tried the sushi but can highly recommend the poke bowls!

3. Bistro Fetis

One of my top choices for breakfast and lunch! Bistro Fetis is a very trendy coffee shop, I’m honestly not sure which I liked more – the food or the interior! They serve a variety of focaccia sandwiches as well as avocado toasts, quiche, cakes and of course high quality coffee. It’s laptop friendly, at least during weekdays, so if you need to get some work or studying done, you can do so here.

4. Kungfu Express

If you’re in the mood for Asian food, look no further! Located in a historical building in a pedestrian street at the heart of Zagreb, Kungfu Express offers a variety of Asian food at very reasonable prices. Expect to pay around 10 euros for a main course. I’ve only tried the Pad Thai, which was delicious and was prepared in just a few minutes.

5. Poke Poke

If you’re wondering where in Zagreb you can eat poke bowls, Poke Poke is the answer! Located in the very center of Zagreb, here you’ll find both fish and meat based poke bowls, as well as vegan. It’s one of those restaurants that I kept going back to, everything I tried there was very tasty and I found the prices to be very fair, around 10 euros for a bowl.

6. Melt Gelato & Brunch Bar

Arguably the most aesthetic & “instagrammable” café in Zagreb, Melt would honestly be worth a visit even if it was just to admire the interior. They have a variety of options when it comes to food – acai bowls, smoothies, pancakes, avocado toasts, egg & bacon, pastries and whatnot. For those that like to do brunch, I’d say this would be a good option. Note that it does get busy, especially during weekends, so consider booking a table in advance.

7. Namaste Bistro

This guide on where to eat in Zagreb wouldn’t be complete without a proper Indian restaurant! There are a few Indian restaurants in Zagreb, but I’d recommend Namaste Bistro over the others. The interior is really aesthetic and the food is simply amazing – as is the staff. You truly can’t go wrong with this place, one of the best Indian food I’ve ever had.

8. Nutelino

Unless you really hate crepés & waffles, I’d argue Nutelino can not disappoint! Whether you’re craving something salty or something sweet, you’ll find it at Nutelino. And it’s gonna be delicious. I only tried the sweet crepés (pictured above) and wow, it was good. They put a lot of nutella in there You should know that the crepés are very filling, so you might want to consider splitting one between two people.

9. The Cookie Factory

A very cozy place to sit down and have a coffee and some pastry. You can choose from cupcakes, chocolate cakes, cheesecake and chocolate chip cookies, just to name some of the many options. Everything I’ve tried there has been good – banana cupcake, oreo cupcake and the chocolate chip cookie are all something I can vouch for. The Cookie factory has two locations in Zagreb – one in the center and another one about 10-15 minutes from the center.

10. Quahwa

The place coffee lovers will not want to miss! Quahwa is a coffee roastery located in the center of Zagreb. Here you’ll find high quality coffee with different types of origins – espressos, lattes, americanos, cortados, ice coffees, etc. You can also purchase their coffee beans to bring home!

The city might be best known for its UNESCO listed Diocletian’s Palace, but there is a lot more to this energetic Croatian city. It features amazing beaches, historical sites and a stunning old town – just to name a few of the things the city has to offer. Not to mention the many picturesque islands that are just a short boat ride away, including the famous Hvar, as well as Vis and Brac. 1. Wander through the old town

Exploring the old town is the best thing to do in Split in my opinion! Known as the historical center of Split, the old town is a maze of cobblestone streets and it’s a true gem! Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town is home to well preserved roman architecture, museums, shops, picturesque narrow streets and squares. You can easily spend hours wandering through the old town, which is entirely pedestrian.

2. Diocletian’s Palace

Arguably the most famous landmark in Split, Diocletian’s Palace was built in 305 AD for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The palace remains largely intact, and is in fact one of the best preserved Roman architecture in the world. Over the years, the old town has grown around the palace, which to this day remains the heart of the old town.

3. Climb the Bell Tower

Just next to Diocletian’s Palace, you’ll find Saint Domnius Cathedral. The inside of the cathedral is beautiful and worth checking out, but even more stunning is the view from the top of the tower. Head up to the bell tower of the Cathedral for panoramic views of the city! Note that the bell of the tower will ring every hour, so you might want to avoid being up there at the hour as the bell is very loud The cost to climb the tower is 40kunas and tickets can be purchased from the ticket office across the square.

4. Join a walking tour

One of the best ways to get to know Split and its history is by joining a walking tour. It’s a good idea to book these tours in advance to secure a spot, especially during the summer months when Split gets incredibly busy with tourists. Check out these top rated guided walking tours that take you to famous landmarks as well as hidden gems, all while learning about the city’s history.

5. Marjan Hill

Marjan Hill is located just west of the city. It’s a nature retreat covered in lush pine forest, scenic viewpoints and trails, making it a perfect place for when you need a break from the city life. Whether you decide to just wander through the park or visit some of the viewpoints, you are bound to enjoy the views and the quietness the Marjan Hill offers. The easiest viewpoint to get to, located only a 10 minute walk from the old town, is the Prva Vidilica Na Marjanu viewpoint (click here for the exact Google Maps location). A bit further is the Vrh Telegrin viewpoint (click here for the Google Maps location), it requires a bit more hiking but has beautiful views. I can also recommend heading down to Kasjuni beach, a picturesque beach where you can cool down in the Adriatic Sea.

6. Znjan Beach

Znjan beach is one of the many beaches in Split, located in the eastern part of the city. It’s a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters, perfect for a relaxed day. There are a few beach clubs around Znjan beach, including Mistral Beach Bar, Taboo Beach Club and Cool Beach Bar. Note that the beach clubs are only open during the summer months. You will also find plenty of cafés, restaurants and a supermarket in the area.

Znjan beach is located around 3km (1.8 miles) from the old town, but it’s easily reachable by bus, car or a taxi.

7. Stroll the Riva

The Riva is a very lively street that runs along the harbour of Split. It’s lined with a variety of cafés & restaurants, colourful buildings, and of course the Adriatic Sea. During the summer you will also encounter a number of street vendors, selling anything from drinks to accessories to skincare products. If you’re lucky, you might even see live music or some street performers. I just love strolling through here, grabbing a coffee and enjoying the view.

8. Klis Fortress

This hilltop medieval fortress is located above the village Klis, only 12km (7.5 miles) from Split. It’s an interesting historical place to visit and offers a scenic view of Split and the nearby islands. The fortress gained popularity when it was used as the Game of Thrones location for Meereen city, but even so it still isn’t too crowded. You can even do a guided Game of Thrones Tour, which will take you to the filming locations in Split, including Klis Fortress.

The fortress is open from 9AM to 5PM every day, but I’d recommend checking the official opening hours here as this can change on short notice. The entrance fee is around 10 euros. Klit Fortress is a 20 minutes drive from Split and can also be reached by bus.

9. Visiting Trg Republike Square

This beautiful red square is a must see when in Split! Around the square you’ll find plenty of cafés & restaurants, making it an ideal spot to sit down and enjoy a drink or a meal. If you happen to be visiting Split in December, Trg Republike turns very christmasy, with an ice skating ring, lots of decorations and little houses where they sell hot chocolate, among other things.

10. Sunset cruise

Seeing the sun set over Split, on a yacht with a drink in hand is the perfect way to end the day! This top rated sunset tour will allow you to see the Split coastline from the water while listening to live music and zipping on unlimited complementary drinks.

If you have time to do some day trips, I can highly recommend visiting Krka national park and Hvar island.

Splitska Coffee is a trendy coffee shop, located about 20 minutes walk from the old town. Its location next to a big OTP bank’s office means that you have lots of business people coming in. There is plenty of seating during weekdays so you don’t feel pressured to give up your table for someone waiting. They offer sandwiches, salats and juices as well as sandwiches.

D16 Coffee

This speciality coffee shop has a wide range of high quality coffee as well as pastries, mainly croissants. I found it to be relatively quiet, but note I was visiting during off season. As it’s located in the old town, I can imagine it being more crowded during the summer months. I found it to be a great place to grab a coffee and get some work done!

MakaMaka Acai & Poke Bar

Maka Make is one of my absolute favourite restaurant in Split. They have lots of healthy options, including acaí bowls, fresh juices & smoothies, poké bowls and sushi. Prices are on the higher end of what you can expect in Split, but the food is delicious so it’s well worth it in my opinion. I often went there to grab one of their freshly made juices and a cup of coffee. It’s usually very quiet during the day so you can stay as long as you like without feeling guilty of occupying the table for too long.

Cookie Lab

This cute little café, located in Bacvice, is a great place to work from for those that like coffee and something sweet. Cookie Lab offers great coffee as well as croissants, delicious cookies, home made ice cream and other pastries.

Krka national park is home to stunning waterfalls, incredible landscape and so much more – I guess it’s no wonder it’s the second most visited national park in Croatia! It’s one of the most breathtaking places I’ve seen in Croatia and certainly one that deserves a spot on all Croatia itineraries. From scenic boat rides, to waterfalls and museums, cafés & restaurants, I promise you won’t be bored. The main place of interest is Skradinski Buk, which is arguably the most beautiful waterfall in the park. You should plan to arrive there early in the morning if you’re visiting during high season, as it will get very crowded during the day. In this guide I will outline everything you need to know before visiting Krka national park, including opening hours, entrances (yes there are more than one) as well as how to get there.

Practical information

Let’s start with some practical information about Kraka national park!

Krka national park opening hours

The national park is open all year round, only with the exception of the 25th and 26th of December. On the 24th and 31st of December the park closes at 12. Opening hours vary throughout the year, as well as having different opening hours for different parts of the park.

The main place of interest, Skradinski Buk, is open as follows:

June through August: 8AM to 8PM
September: 8AM to 7PM
October 1st through October 15th: 8AM to 6PM
October 16th through October 31st: 9AM to 5PM
November through February: 9AM to 4PM
March: 9AM to 5PM
April: 8AM to 6PM
May: from 8AM to 7PM

Note that the Krka monastery is closed from November throughout March.

Entrances to Krka national park

There are five entrances to Krka national park, with the main ones being Lazovac and Skradin. Here I’ll go over what you need to know about each of the entrances.

Lozovac

This is the main entrance when arriving by car or in a tourist bus. At this entrance you have a ticket office as well as free parking for visitors. Tourist buses are allowed to transport visitors from the entrance to Skradinski Buk, and from April through October there is an organized transport for individual visitors from the entrance to Skradinski Buk. If you are visiting ouside of those months, you can enter with your vehicle. For those that like to hike, you also have the option to take the 875m (0.54 miles) hiking trail from the entrance to Skradinski buk.

Skradin

A part from being a picturesque town, Skradin is also the location of one of the five entrances to Krka national park. Those that arrive on a public you will likely enter through Skradin. There is parking available in Skradin, but it’s limited, so if you’re driving I’d recommend that you choose the Lozovac entrance.

Once you arrive in Skradin, head to the ticket office if you haven’t already purchased your ticket online. You then have the option of either heading to the pier and hop on a scenic boat ride that will take you to Skradinski Buk, or you can opt to for the equally scenic 3.4km (2.1 miles) hike. The boats run approximately every hour from April through mid November, you can see the complete schedule here.

Roski Slap/Laskovica

You can reach Roski Slap by road from Skradin, Knin and Drnis, as well as by one of the Krka excursion boats from the Skradinski Buk waterfall. Parking is available at this entrance and normally it has plenty availability. There is a ticket office where you can purchase tickets for the national park as well as for the boat excursions.

The boat excursions to the Krka monastery (note that it’s closed from November throughout March) and to Visovac Island are available from June through September, you can find the complete schedule here.

Burnum/Puljane

Those that are interested archaeological sites will want to choose the Burnum entrance. It offers access to an archaeological site where you can see parts of Roman Burnum as well as artefacts that have been dug up, including weapons and daily use items. Krka monastery can be reached by an organized boat excursion from Roski Slap waterfall during the months of April through October, as well as by car from Kistanje all year round.

From Kistjanje, follow the signs for the Krka monastery and head down the twisting road to the monastery, where you’ll find parking.

Is Krka national park worth visiting?

Yes, Krka national park is absolutely worth visiting! The picturesque Skradinski Buk waterfall alone makes it worth a visit, not to mention the six other waterfalls and the beautiful landscape.

How much time do you need in Krka national park?

Krka national park can be explored within a day, and if you have enough time I’d recommend that you allow for a whole day at the park. Skradinski buk is the main sight, but the park also features six more waterfalls, a museum, a few cafés and restaurants, not to mention the stunning landscape. You can go on a boat tour (which I’d highly recommend), check out the souvenir shops as well as simply walking along the boardwalks and taking photos.

How to get to Krka national park?

Krka national park is easily accessible from coastal cities such as Split, Sibenik and Zadar. You can opt to rent a car, take a public bus or do a guided tour.

Getting to Krka by car

The most convenient way to get to Krka national park is by renting a car. This will of course give you the greatest flexibility, this is especially true during off season when public transport and tours run less frequently then during the summer months. Driving in Croatia is easy and the roads are in great condition.

Driving distances to Krka from the major towns:

Sibernik: 20km, approx. 20min drive
Zadar: 73km, approx. 1 hour drive
Split: 92km, approx. 1.15 hour drive
Zagreb: 325km, approx. 3 hour drive

I would recommend choosing the Lozovac entrance if you’re driving as it has the greatest availability of parking.

Getting to Krka by public bus

It’s possible and relatively simple to get to Krka by a public bus from the major cities. Note that buses area much more frequent during the summer months, with only a few of departures a day during the winter months. The bus stop in Skradin is only a few minutes walk from the ticket office and the pier where you can take a boat to Skradinski Buk. The boats run approximately every hour from April through mid November, you can see the complete schedule here.

The bus ride from Sibenik takes around 30 minutes. There are 3-4 departures a day during off season while they are much more frequent during summer.

The journey from Zadar takes around an hour. During the winter months there are two departures per day, but up to eight in July and August.

The bus ride from Split takes around an hour and 20 minutes. There are around four departures a day during winter, but up to twelve in July and August.

Visiting Krka on a guided tour

For those that prefer to go on an organized tour, you can do so from either Split, Zadar or Trogir. This is a great option for those that aren’t comfortable doing the trip on their own or those that simply want the convenience of having someone else organizing everything.

Note that entrance fee to the park is usually not included in the tour prices.

Day trips from Split to Krka national park

There are plenty of guided tours available from Split to Krka.

This top rated day trip includes a visit to a local winery where you’ll get a chance to taste local wines, cheese and olives.

Day trips from Zadar to Krka national park

From Zadar you have fewer options for day trips than from Split – I’d recommend checking out these two.

This trip includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation in Zadar and will take you to Krka in a minibus. You will have 6 hours to explore the park, which is plenty of time to see everything. Afterwards, the driver will be waiting for you and will drop you off at your accommodation.

For those that are into wines, I’d highly recommend checking out this trip that includes a visit to a local winery where you’ll get a tour of the winery and the procedures, followed by wine & cheese tasting!

Day trips from Trogir to Krka national park

This full-day tour from Trogir will allow you to see the famous Skradinski Buk, as well as the Roski Slap waterfall and the stunning Visovac Island. After visiting Krka national park, you will explore the small picturesque town of Sibenik.

Another option is this highly rated tour from Zadar that includes 5 hours in the Krka park, followed by a visit to a winery where you’ll learn about the production and taste some local wines!

Can you swim in Krka?

No, it is not allowed to swim in Krka anymore. It used to be possible to swim by the Krka waterfalls, but since 2021 it has been forbidden to swim there in order to preserve the waters of the park.

Final thoughts on visiting Krka national park

Visiting Krka was honestly one of the highlights of my time in Croatia! I visited on a beautiful autumn day at the beginning of November. I got to enjoy the park without hardly any other visitors, which really added to the experience. I’m sure it’s equally as stunning during the summer, just try to arrive early at Skradinski Buk to avoid the crowds. I would recommend doing a boat tour if you have the chance! Since I arrived by bus, I entered through Skradin and took the boat from there to Skradinski Buk, which was incredibly scenic. After having visited Krka, I can promise you won’t regret doing a day trip there!
